Safeguarding Kids and Youth

At The Butcher Shop your child's safety is our number one priority.

We take extra care when working with children and young people. We ensure:

  • All coaches working with kids have up-to-date background checks and safeguarding training

  • Kids are always supervised during class

  • Children are encouraged to speak up if something feels wrong

  • Parents are welcome to speak to coaches at any time

🤝 Parent/Guardian Expectations

Parents and guardians are encouraged to:

  • Stay and watch classes when possible. However, we discourage any form of coaching from the sides.

  • Inform us of any medical, emotional, or developmental needs your child may have.

  • Let us know if your child shares something concerning at home or in class.

  • Listen to your kids, ask them about class and encourage their Jiu Jitsu journey.

🧒 Child-Friendly Approach

We want kids to feel safe and supported. Children are told:

  • They can say “no” to any activity or partner they don’t feel comfortable with.

  • They can speak privately with a coach at any time.

  • They will be listened to and taken seriously if they share a worry.

🚫 What We Don’t Allow

  • Bullying, teasing, or rough behavior outside of training.

  • Adults being alone with children (e.g., in changing rooms or cars).

  • Physical punishment or shouting.

  • Inappropriate language or conduct by coaches or students.

  • Social media contact between coaches and children

📢 Reporting a Concern or Incident

If something happens that makes your child feel unsafe, you can talk to:

1. The Coach

All of our coaches have the duty to maintain a safe environment in their classes and are available to discuss any issues with you. Ask to talk to them in private after the class.

2. Gym Owner – Kevin McGalde

3. Safeguarding Officers

👩 Naomi Stevens

Naomi works in long term care and has extensive safeguarding experience. She’s not a staff member but trains at the gym regularly.

👨 Connor Green

Everyone has the right to feel safe.

If something doesn’t feel right—please speak up. We’re here to listen.
